4. Run the playing Audio troubleshooter
Method 3.
Try updating the Audio drivers from the manufacturer's website and check if the issue persists.
Follow the steps to update the audio drivers:
1. Press Windows key + X key and click Device Manager.
2. Expand the Sound, Video and game controllers.
3. Right-click on the Sound card and click on Update driver software.

I have installed all pending updates, and have tried with multiple sets of headphones with no difference. The only changes I made to my computer were upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
I have tried all three methods advised above and the issue still persists. My audio drivers are 'High Definition Audio Device' and 'VIA HD Audio(Win 10)' if this helps. If you need more information I'll be happy to provide it.

Upon re-installing the drivers from the OEM website I also chose to install Via HD VDeck which seems to have solved the problem. When plugging in my headphones the sound automatically switches to them now.
However, it has removed the 'headphones' option under 'Playback Devices' meaning I cannot set the headphone volume separately to the speaker volume. Is this a problem with the drivers, or have I uninstalled something by accident?

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I suggest you to go to the manufacturer's website and check for any updated drivers available there. If so, try to install them and check if it fix the issue.
If no updated drivers available then try installing the available drivers in compatibility mode.
Follow the steps below on how to install driver in compatibility mode :
1. Download the driver from the manufacturer's website and save it on your local disk.
2. Right click on the setup file of the driver and select "Properties".
3. Select "Compatibility" Tab.
4. Place a check mark next to "Run this program in Compatibility mode" and select operating system from the drop down list.
5. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. This worked for me too. I'd been fighting this problem since moving to Win 10 - I'd reinstalled the drivers, that didn't work - but I hadn't UNINSTALLED them first. Thank you!
