"With You I'm Born Again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 motion picture show Fast Interruption. It was performed by Motown recording artists Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited as Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number iv on the Billboard Hot 100[two] and number two on the UK singles chart.[iii]
History [edit]
The music from Fast Break was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Ballad Connors put words to iv of the songs on the soundtrack anthology. Connors recalls, "I had written almost of the lyrics to 'With You lot I'm Born Again' in 22 minutes, only I couldn't find two words and it was driving me crazy."[iv] The right words came to her on her style to an ice cream parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper along with her social club. "I had finally found it—the line I was seeking--'Come show me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll find this'—and I wanted to get it down on paper."[four]
Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston's partner for the two duets that had been written for the moving-picture show,[5] and each vocalizer also had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album as well. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally not very addicted of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to do their own thing, but this worked out extremely well for both of them."[iv] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With You lot I'm Built-in Again". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it existence a hit single."[6]
Connors noted the impression some were left with past the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Baton Preston play the song on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he'south a star.'" Connors too shared, "The belatedly corking Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he beginning heard the song on the radio and stood straight upwards in amazement, narrowly missing getting his throat cutting past the scissors. True story."[4]
But radio airplay and tape sales almost never happened. The Fast Break soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco notwithstanding permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the album, the dance tune "Go for It", was called as the single that would be issued to promote the album. That selection barely made a dent in the charts, spending 1 calendar week on the Disco singles chart at number fourscore in Billboard magazine[vii] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for one week at number 108.[2]
The film did not get much attention, either, and Preston described their next try to give "With You I'chiliad Born Again" more than exposure, explaining that "afterwards the film didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. We pulled it off that anthology and put it on mine."[six] Preston'south anthology, Late at Night, came out later in 1979, merely even with that reissue of the song, Preston insisted that "we yet didn't remember of it as a single."[half dozen] Information technology did, however, begin to get airplay in the European market[6] and was finally released every bit a single at the terminate of the year.
Another hurdle the song had to overcome was the fact that its title did not click with some tape buyers. "Connors says her but regret about 'With You I'm Built-in Once again' is that she didn't championship it 'Come up Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy chosen me to let me know we had a monster hit on our hands merely that early many people were going into record stores asking for "Come up Bring Me Your Softness", and some record sales were lost as a consequence.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "born again" is often associated with Christianity may have also been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, only Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that'southward the style nosotros felt almost ane some other. Culp was the inspiration."[4] The singers also felt the song could exist interpreted in a religious context equally well as being a romantic love song. Preston explained, "When nosotros saw Fast Break, we understood it was a romantic song. But I think of it as religious because God is dear, so it all inter-relates."[6] This religious aspect would later be played up by the show Glee in the flavor two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (played past Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the song dressed equally a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.
Chart success [edit]
"With You I'm Born Again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the result of the magazine dated Dec 8, 1979, and peaked at number iv over the course of 29 weeks.[2] The post-obit calendar week marked its beginning appearance on the Uk singles nautical chart[8] and on Billboard'southward listing of the fifty most popular Adult Contemporary songs in the U.S., and both chart runs resulted in a number 2 showing.[nine] [3] It also started three weeks on the magazine's Hot Soul Singles nautical chart in the Jan 19, 1980, effect and got every bit high as number 86.[10] It was Preston'southward biggest hit in five years and the biggest pop hitting of Wright'south career.
